Our Projects: Turning Vision into Action

Our work is rooted in multi-stakeholder collaborations, policy engagement, research and direct interventions that integrate animal interest into broader food and public health frameworks. By embedding One Health One Welfare into actionable strategies, we ensure that animal interests are not an afterthought but a foundational element of sustainable food systems.

We don’t just advocate for change—we implement it, demonstrating that systemic transformation is possible when policy, practice, and community engagement align.

Addressing the Challenges of Industrial Aquaculture: Towards a Fairer Future for Farmers, Fish, and the Environment

India’s aquaculture sector is growing rapidly, but industrialized practices harm farmers, fish, and the environment.

At Samayu, we integrate animal justice into governance through an intersectional One Health One Welfare framework that recognizes the interconnectedness of environmental justice, public health, and farmer livelihoods. Our initiatives bridge policy insights with on-the-ground action, ensuring better outcomes for animals, people and the planet.

We recognize that meaningful change requires collaboration across sectors. Partnering with the Fisheries Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh, we are working to improve the welfare of 92.5 million farmed fish. Our One Health One Welfare (OHOW) work also engages over 120 farmers and 8 fisher cooperatives.
Through focused group discussions, Niti Panchayat, and baseline surveys, we have directly engaged with over 100 farmers, fostering a more resilient and responsible aquaculture sector.

Key interventions include:

* Water Quality & Biosecurity Initiatives: Engaging with fish farmers, including providing them with testing kits to improve oxygen levels, water parameters and prevent diseases.

* Policy Engagement & Research: Publishing peer-reviewed research on zoonotic risks, antimicrobial resistance, and sustainable alternatives like seaweed farming to inform evidence-based decision-making.

* Community-Based Governance: Partnering with village administrations to restore aquatic ecosystems, reduce invasive weeds, and improve water parameters in community fish ponds.

  • Evidence is at the core of our work. Samayu collaborates with academic institutions, researchers, and policymakers to generate insights that inform just fair food system reforms. Our focus areas include zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and the socio-economic impacts of industrial animal agriculture.

  • So far, we’ve published 3 key research papers (another 2 under submission) in peer-reviewed journals on zoonotic diseases and the risks of poultry and fish farming and sustainable alternatives for food production.

Research and Academic Partnerships

Systems Approach and Partnerships

  • Systemic change requires collective action. Through multi-stakeholder partnerships with local NGOs like CDC Balaghat and Gramin Anchalik Krishak Samaj Samiti, we’re restoring pond water quality under the MNREGA scheme. By collaborating with universities like Rani Durgwati University and Acharya Nagarjuna University, and engaging multiple experts, animal science, and fisheries, we ensure informed, practical solutions.

  • Our academic alliances, including an MoU with Government Science College and partnerships with Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Science University, further strengthen our research and fieldwork.

Other Projects

  • Poultry and AMR

We have formal collaborations with the Governments of Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the poultry sector, impacting 16.6 million birds in Madhya Pradesh and 108 million birds in Andhra Pradesh, respectively.

To tackle AMR we brought together experts on one platform. Key challenges included limited surveillance, inadequate training for veterinarians, weak enforcement of regulations, and financial constraints for small-scale farmers.

The convening marked a significant step towards collaborative action in combating AMR and promoting healthier ecosystems for animals and humans alike.

  • Faith and Food Systems

Recognizing the role of faith and culture in shaping food choices, we facilitated dialogues with religious leaders and communities.

Through our ‘Animals and Faith in India’ report with 250+ references and insights from 60+ religious texts, we built a strong foundation for faith-based community engagement on important issues we face today in food systems. By engaging 10+ religious leaders and scholars across six major religions in India, we amplified the moral case for animal interests, leading to 3 public statements and reaching 260K+ people through social media influencers.

  • Samayu’s Activator – Food for a Green Planet

Through Food for a Green Planet we successfully had 5 leadership convenings with a diverse group of leaders, including policymakers, scientists, veterinarians, and environmentalists, fostering cross-sector collaboration. Discussions underscored the urgent need for inclusive, multi-sectoral approaches to address the interconnected challenges of animal agriculture, public health, and environmental degradation.

Key takeaways included the importance of integrating One Health into policy frameworks, amplifying regional voices, and ensuring equitable solutions that prioritize both human and animal well-being. The campaign further strengthened networks for continued advocacy and action, paving the way for a just and fair food system reforms.

  • Multispecies Coexistence Project

Our work in food system reform extends to broader One Health One Welfare challenges. In Ghaziabad, we apply this intersectional approach to bring a multi-species coexistence project, recognising its links to public health, urban governance, and community well-being.

Under this initiative, 2 convenings were held which brought together experts and stakeholders to enhance collaboration and shape policy pathways on canine coexistence. Media initiatives, including workshops with over 60 journalists, resulted in impactful op-eds and campaigns.

The result? Over 40 impactful articles and reports that shattered misinformation, reshaped public narratives, and championed compassionate coexistence.
